Introducing Josie Davis - and her mysterious Y&R character
Y&R newcomer Josie Davis loves playing Sharon's devious friend Grace Turner - especially after spending five years playing goody-two-shoes Sarah Powell on Charles in Charge. The twentysomething actress says after 25-plus episodes, she's impressed by the fast pace of daytime - and by her talented co-stars. Although she's still not sure what to make of good girl/bad girl Grace, Josie does have plenty to say about other topics. Such as:
- Her first exposure to Y&R: "I hadn't seen the show, so before my audition, I watched to see the girl Grace was going to be friends with - Sharon - and the guy she was supposed to fall for - Nick. When I saw them I thought, 'Oh, she's cute - and, wow, so is he!'"
- Her first day of work at Y&R: "Here it is, my first scene, and we didn't rehearse a thing. We did it in one take, and I couldn't believe it!"
- Her new pal Sharon Case (Sharon): "I auditioned with Sharon, and we clicked right away. She's hilarious. She and I will joke around a lot, then we have to try not to laugh during our scenes. It makes it a little difficult."
- Grace Turner: "I love Grace because she's completely uninhibited and confident, which is unlike me in certain ways. I can be really shy, so this is a great stretch for me. I never came in saying, 'I play the bad girl.' I want to bring other qualities to Grace. She was supposedly trying to get Nick in a devious way, but now I hear they may want her to be more likable."
- Doing a soap: "I didn't want to be on a soap for a long time because I didn't want to get tied down with a contract. I auditioned for Y&R about a year or two ago, and the casting director really liked me. When I turned out to be too young for the part they were casting, they asked me to come back for a later role, but I declined. This time, I knew I couldn't turn it down, and it ended up being the right decision."
- Playing Sarah on Charles in Charge: "I was 13 when it started and 17 when it ended, and it was the first television show I did. I was shocked when I finally got the part after 10 auditions. Charles was a good experience, but it held my career back for a long time because the only thing people could see me as was Sarah. It was hard to think I could make the transition from someone like goody-two-shoes Sarah to someone complex like Grace."
- Modeling: "After Charles in Charge, I did some guest-starring roles and a few movies, but nothing big. It's such a tough business that I had to do modeling on the side. But acting is my thing. I'd die if I couldn't act, so this show was the obvious choice."
- Being recognized by fans: "I could be wearing sunglasses, a hat and baggy clothes and someone would still recognize me from Charles. I was in a restaurant the other day and someone said, 'You were on Charles in Charge,' and I said, 'Yes, but now I'm on The Young and the Restless!'"
